How rabbit coat color genetics work

Rabbit coat color is controlled by several separate gene locations (loci), each with a dominant and recessive version (allele). The Agouti locus determines a banded vs. solid coat, the Brown locus separates black-based color from chocolate, the Dilute locus controls whether color is full-strength or diluted (like blue or lilac), and the Extension locus determines whether black or brown pigment is expressed at all versus a red, orange, or fawn coat. A rabbit’s overall color and pattern comes from the combined effect of all these loci together.

How this calculator predicts outcomes

This tool applies standard Mendelian genetics to a single chosen locus. Each parent is described as homozygous dominant (two dominant alleles), heterozygous (one of each, a hidden carrier), or homozygous recessive (two recessive alleles). The calculator determines the probability each parent passes on a dominant or recessive allele, then combines those probabilities using the Punnett square method to predict the genotype ratio of the offspring, and translates that into the percentage chance of each visible phenotype.

Because full rabbit coloring involves multiple loci interacting together, this calculator’s result describes only the single locus you selected, not a complete predicted coat color.
