How quilt binding yardage works
Binding wraps around the entire outer edge of a quilt, so the total length needed is based on the quilt’s perimeter, plus extra for mitered corners and the diagonal seams that join binding strips end to end.
How this calculator works
The calculator computes your quilt’s perimeter (2 x width + 2 x height), adds about 15% extra for corners and seam joins plus a 12-inch buffer for the final join, then figures out how many fabric-width strips of your chosen binding width you need to cut, converting the total fabric length into yards.
This is a standard approximation used by quilters; exact yardage can vary slightly with your binding style (single vs. double-fold) and corner technique, so it’s wise to buy a little extra fabric as a margin.
