What Is Profit?
Profit is what’s left of revenue after subtracting all costs. This calculator gives you the raw profit figure along with two commonly confused ratios: profit margin and markup.
The Formulas
Profit = Revenue − Cost. Profit Margin = (Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100, showing what share of each sales dollar is profit. Markup = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100, showing how much you added on top of cost to set the price.
- Margin and markup are always different numbers for the same sale — a 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin.
- “Cost” here can represent cost of goods sold or total costs, depending on what kind of profit you want to measure (gross vs. net).
