Price Elasticity of Supply Calculator
Measure how responsive quantity supplied is to a price change using the midpoint (arc) method for price elasticity of supply.
What price elasticity of supply measures
Price elasticity of supply (PES) measures how much the quantity of a good that producers supply changes in response to a change in its price. A higher elasticity means producers ramp supply up or down sharply when price changes; a lower elasticity means supply barely reacts.
The formula
This calculator uses the midpoint (arc elasticity) method, which gives a consistent result whether price rises or falls: PES = (% change in quantity supplied) ÷ (% change in price), where each percentage change is calculated relative to the average of the initial and new values rather than just the starting value. A result greater than 1 indicates elastic supply, less than 1 indicates inelastic supply, and exactly 1 indicates unit elastic supply.
Elasticity generally reflects real-world constraints like production capacity, time to adjust output, and availability of inputs. This calculator is for general economics education and planning purposes.
