๐งช Pool Shock Calculator
Figure out how much shock treatment to add to your pool to reach your target chlorine level.
How pool shock dosing works
Shocking a pool means adding a concentrated dose of chlorine to rapidly raise the free chlorine level, breaking down chloramines (the source of that ‘chlorine smell’) and killing algae or bacteria. How much product you need depends on your pool’s volume, the gap between current and target chlorine levels, and the percentage of available chlorine in your specific shock product.
How this calculator works
The calculator first finds the pounds of pure chlorine needed using the standard pool formula: (target ppm – current ppm) x pool volume in gallons x 8.34, divided by 1,000,000. It then divides that by your shock product’s available chlorine percentage (found on the product label) to find how many pounds of the actual product to add.
Always follow your product label’s safety instructions, add shock in the evening to avoid rapid UV breakdown, and retest chlorine levels a few hours after treatment before swimming.
