How GWAM (Gross Words a Minute) Is Calculated
GWAM is the standard typing speed measure used in typing tests and business education. It defines a “word” as any 5 characters (including spaces), not a literal dictionary word, so speed can be measured consistently regardless of average word length.
The formula is: GWAM = (Total Characters / 5) / Minutes Typed. Net Words a Minute (NWAM) then subtracts a penalty for errors: NWAM = GWAM – (Errors / Minutes), giving a speed score that also reflects accuracy.
This is the standard method used in most typing certification tests and classroom typing programs for general skills assessment.
