How poem reading time is estimated
Reading time depends on the total word count and the pace of reading. Silent reading is fastest at roughly 238 words per minute on average, reading aloud naturally slows to around 150 words per minute, and dramatic or performance-style poetry reading, with pauses for emphasis, is slower still at around 110 words per minute.

The calculator multiplies your poem’s line count by the average words per line to estimate total word count, then divides by the words-per-minute rate for your chosen reading style to estimate total reading time in minutes and seconds.
