What the Passive House standard is

Passive House (Passivhaus) is a rigorous, voluntary building energy standard developed by the Passivhaus Institute. A key requirement is that a certified building’s space heating demand does not exceed 15 kilowatt-hours per square meter of floor area per year, achieved primarily through superinsulation, airtightness, and heat-recovery ventilation rather than a large heating system.

How this calculator works

Enter your building’s heated floor area and its current annual heating energy use per square meter (many existing homes fall between 100 and 200 kWh/m²/yr, while newer code-built homes may be lower). The calculator compares that to the 15 kWh/m²/yr Passive House target to estimate the annual energy and cost savings, and the percentage reduction in heating demand.

This is a simplified estimate for general planning purposes; actual achievable savings depend on renovation scope, climate, and building-specific factors, and reaching Passive House certification typically requires a detailed design process.
