What This Calculator Does
When capacitors are connected in parallel, their plates effectively combine into one larger capacitor, increasing total capacitance. This calculator adds up to four capacitor values together to find the total capacitance of the parallel combination.
The Formula
Unlike resistors, capacitors in parallel add directly: Ctotal = C1 + C2 + C3 + C4 (in the same units). This is because parallel capacitors share the same voltage across them while each contributes its own charge storage, and total charge is the sum of the individual charges at a given voltage.
- Leave unused capacitor fields at zero if you’re only combining two or three capacitors.
- Voltage rating: when combining capacitors in parallel, the combination’s safe voltage rating is limited to the lowest-rated individual capacitor.
