What this calculator does
The Cell Doubling Time Calculator estimates how long it takes a growing population of cells, bacteria, or other microorganisms to double in number, based on a starting count, an ending count, and the time elapsed between the two measurements.
The formula it uses
During exponential growth, doubling time is calculated as Td = t Ć ln(2) / ln(N / Nā), where Nā is the starting population, N is the ending population, and t is the elapsed time. This is the standard formula used in microbiology and cell culture labs to describe exponential growth.
The calculator also reports the growth rate constant (k) and the number of doublings that occurred over the measured period.
A note on accuracy
This calculator assumes the population is growing exponentially (unlimited nutrients, no lag or stationary phase) during the measured interval. Real cultures can deviate from pure exponential growth, so results are best used for general planning and educational purposes rather than precise laboratory reporting.
