What NEDOCS measures
The National Emergency Department Overcrowding Score (NEDOCS) is a published index that combines several operational metrics — patient census, bed counts, boarding admissions, wait times, and ventilator use — into a single score representing how crowded an emergency department is at a given moment.
How the score is calculated
This calculator applies the original NEDOCS regression formula, which weights ED patient census relative to ED beds, admitted (boarding) patients relative to total hospital beds, ventilator patients in the ED, the longest wait time, and the wait time of the last admitted patient. Higher scores indicate more severe crowding, ranging from ‘not busy’ up to ‘dangerously crowded’.
This tool is for general operational and educational reference. Real-world ED crowding decisions should rely on live data and the judgment of hospital administration and clinical staff.
