⚙️ Material Removal Rate Calculator
Calculate the material removal rate (MRR) for a machining operation from cutting width, depth of cut, and feed rate.
per min
What this calculator does
The material removal rate (MRR) calculator estimates how quickly a machining operation, such as milling or turning, removes material, which is useful for estimating cycle time and comparing cutting parameters.
The formula
The standard formula is MRR = width of cut × depth of cut × feed rate. This gives the volume of material removed per minute, in cubic inches per minute or cubic millimeters per minute depending on your unit system. Multiplying by 60 converts the rate to a per-hour figure for longer job estimates.
- Width and depth of cut should use the same length unit as selected, and feed rate should be in that same unit per minute.
- Actual achievable MRR is also limited by machine power, tool rigidity, and material properties, which this simple formula does not account for.
This tool is for general estimating and educational purposes in shop planning.
