How kite size is estimated

Kiteboarders generally need a bigger kite in light wind and a smaller kite in strong wind, and heavier riders generally need more kite area than lighter riders at the same wind speed. This calculator applies the widely used rule-of-thumb ratio between rider weight and wind speed that most kite-sizing charts from equipment manufacturers are built around.

The formula

Kite size (m²) ≈ (weight in kg × a sizing factor) ÷ wind speed in knots. The sizing factor is adjusted slightly for skill level, since beginners typically ride with a bit more kite for stability in a given wind range while advanced riders can comfortably use smaller, more responsive kites.

This is a starting-point estimate only, not a substitute for a proper fitting from a kiteboarding instructor or shop. Always check local wind conditions, tides, and your own skill level before choosing gear or heading onto the water.
