What this calculator does

Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because it is moving. This calculator finds that energy in joules from the object’s mass and its speed.

The formula

Kinetic energy is calculated with the standard physics formula KE = ½mv², where m is mass in kilograms and v is velocity in meters per second. Because velocity is squared, doubling an object’s speed quadruples its kinetic energy, while doubling its mass only doubles the energy.

This formula applies to everyday speeds and does not include relativistic effects, which only become significant at speeds approaching the speed of light. It is intended for general physics education and reference.
