What is impact energy?

Impact energy is the kinetic energy an object carries at the instant it strikes something, representing the total amount of energy that must be absorbed or dissipated during the collision.

The formula

Impact energy uses the standard kinetic energy formula: KE = ½ × m × v2, where m is mass and v is velocity at the moment of impact. Because velocity is squared, doubling impact speed quadruples the impact energy, which is why speed matters so much more than weight in most collision scenarios.

This gives the total kinetic energy at impact, not the peak force experienced, which also depends on how quickly that energy is absorbed (stopping distance and time). This calculator is for general physics education and planning purposes.
