Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA scores every class on the same 0-4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder courses like Honors or AP/IB classes, recognizing that an A in a college-level class typically reflects more work than an A in a standard class.
The Formula
Weighted GPA = ∑((Base Grade Points + Level Bonus) × Credits) ÷ Total Credits, capped at 5.0 per course. This calculator adds +0.5 for Honors courses and +1.0 for AP/IB courses, which are common (though not universal) bonus values — some schools use different bonuses or a 0-5.0 scale differently.
- Check your own school’s specific weighting policy, since it can vary by district.
- Leave a course on ‘Not used’ if you have fewer than four classes to enter.
- Provided for general educational planning; your official transcript GPA is the authoritative source.
