Planning a hexagon quilt
Hexagon (‘hexie’) quilts are pieced from many small regular hexagons sewn edge to edge. Knowing how many pieces you need before you start cutting saves time and fabric.
The formula
The area of a regular hexagon with side length s is Area = (3√3/2) × s². This calculator divides your quilt’s total area (Width × Height) by that hexagon area to estimate the number of hexagons needed, then adds a 10% buffer for edge pieces, trimming, and layout waste, and estimates fabric yardage assuming a 44-inch-wide bolt with a 15% cutting-waste allowance.
Actual hexagon count depends on your exact layout, whether edges are trimmed straight or left pointed, and pattern piecing choices, so treat this as a planning estimate and buy a little extra fabric. For general craft planning purposes.
