How this estimate works

This calculator multiplies a typical caffeine content per standard serving of your chosen coffee type by how many servings you drink per day, then compares the total against commonly cited general guidelines: up to about 400mg/day for most healthy adults, and a lower threshold of about 200mg/day often suggested for pregnant or breastfeeding people and for those who are more sensitive to caffeine.

Why this varies by person and by cup

Actual caffeine content differs by bean, roast, brew strength and cup size, so the values here are reasonable averages rather than exact measurements. Individual tolerance to caffeine also varies widely based on genetics, body weight, medication use and habitual intake.

  • An 8oz drip coffee has roughly 95mg of caffeine
  • Espresso is concentrated but usually served in small amounts
  • Decaf still contains a small amount of caffeine
