What this calculator does

This tool gives an approximate conversion between the Brinell (HB) and Vickers (HV) hardness scales, two common ways of measuring how resistant a metal is to indentation.

How the calculation works

Real hardness scale conversions are non-linear and depend on the specific material and standardized reference tables such as ASTM E140, because different indenters and load ranges are used for each scale. This calculator uses a widely cited simplified ratio (HV is roughly 1.05 times HB for many steels) to give a quick estimate in either direction.

Important caveat: this is a rough approximation for general reference and educational purposes only. For material certification, quality control, or engineering specifications, use the official ASTM E140 conversion tables or scale-specific testing appropriate to the material.
