What ‘ideal weight’ means here

There is no single medically exact ‘ideal weight’ for a person — healthy weight depends on body frame, muscle mass, and many individual factors. Instead, researchers over the decades have proposed several height-based formulas that approximate a typical healthy weight for a given height and sex. This calculator shows four of the most commonly referenced ones.

How this calculator works

Enter your height and gender. The calculator applies the Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964) formulas, all of which were originally developed for estimating medication dosing and clinical reference weights, and now are commonly used as general weight benchmarks. Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet tall and adds a fixed amount per inch above that. The ‘Average Ideal Weight’ is simply the mean of all four.

These formulas do not account for muscle mass, bone structure, or body composition, so athletic or larger-framed individuals may naturally sit above these numbers while still being healthy. Use this as a general reference point, not a medical target, and for general planning and educational purposes only.
