This tool estimates the weight of a gold item from its volume and purity (karat), using the known density of pure gold and a simple alloy approximation for lower purities.
The formula
Pure gold (24K) has a density of 19.32 g/cm³. For lower-karat gold alloys, this calculator approximates the alloy’s density as a weighted blend of pure gold and a typical alloying metal density, based on purity fraction (karat/24). Weight = volume × estimated density.
This is an approximation for general reference — actual jewelry alloys vary (copper, silver, palladium, etc. in different ratios), which affects real density and weight slightly.
