What melt value means
Melt value is the raw value of the pure gold contained in an item, such as jewelry, coins, or scrap, based only on its weight and purity, ignoring any craftsmanship, brand, or collectible value.
How this calculator works
Enter the item’s weight (grams, troy ounces, or pennyweight), its karat purity, and the current spot price of gold per troy ounce. The calculator converts your weight to grams, multiplies by the purity fraction for the selected karat (for example, 14K gold is 14/24, or about 58.3%, pure gold) to find the pure gold content, then multiplies that by the current price per gram to estimate melt value.
This is an estimate for general informational purposes. Actual buyers (refiners, pawn shops, jewelers) typically pay less than pure melt value to cover their processing costs and profit margin, and gold spot prices change constantly throughout the trading day.
