How this calculator works
Gas dryers typically cost less to run than electric dryers because natural gas is usually cheaper per unit of heat energy. This calculator uses typical published energy-use averages: about 3.3 kWh per load for an electric dryer, and about 0.3 therms of gas plus 0.5 kWh of electricity (for the motor, drum, and igniter) per load for a gas dryer.
The formula
Annual cost = Loads per year × energy used per load × your utility rate. The calculator compares both totals and shows the estimated yearly savings from choosing a gas dryer.
Actual costs vary by dryer model, load size, venting, and moisture-sensing settings. Purchase price and installation costs (a gas line versus a 240V outlet) are not included here.
