What this calculator does

The framing calculator estimates how many wall studs you’ll need to frame a straight wall, including extra studs for corners and rough openings around doors and windows.

The formula

The base (“field”) stud count comes from dividing the wall length by the on-center stud spacing (commonly 16 or 24 inches) and adding one for the starting stud. Each corner or wall intersection typically needs about 3 extra studs to provide a nailing surface for the adjoining wall, and each door or window opening needs roughly 3 additional studs (king and jack studs). Plate boards are estimated assuming a double top plate and single bottom plate cut from 8-foot lumber.

This is a general framing estimate for planning purposes. Always verify stud counts and header sizing against your local building code and engineered plans before construction.
