What This Calculates
Flywheels store rotational kinetic energy that can be released to smooth out power delivery or provide short-term energy storage. This calculator estimates that stored energy for a solid-disc flywheel.
The Formula
E = ½Iω², where the moment of inertia of a solid disc is I = ½mr² (m is mass, r is radius), and ω = 2π × RPM / 60 is the angular velocity in radians per second.
For general educational and planning purposes; real flywheels may use different geometries (rims, hubs) with different inertia formulas.
