What This Calculates

In semiconductor physics, the intrinsic Fermi level marks the reference energy level in an undoped semiconductor where electron and hole concentrations are equal. It typically sits near the middle of the band gap.

The Formula

Ei = Eg/2 + (kBT/2) × ln(Nv/Nc), measured above the valence band edge, where Eg is the band gap, kB is Boltzmann’s constant (in eV/K), T is temperature, and Nc and Nv are the effective densities of states in the conduction and valence bands.
