What Is E-Waste?
Electronic waste, or e-waste, includes discarded phones, computers, tablets, and other gadgets. According to United Nations e-waste monitoring reports, global e-waste generation has been rising rapidly, and much of it is not properly collected or recycled, which can release hazardous materials like lead and mercury into the environment while wasting recoverable metals such as copper, gold, and rare earth elements.
How the Estimate Is Calculated
This calculator multiplies how often you replace each device type by a typical average weight for that device category: about 0.17 kg for a smartphone, 2.0 kg for a laptop, 0.5 kg for a tablet, and 0.15 kg for small gadgets like earbuds, chargers, or smartwatches, then sums the totals. Yearly e-waste (kg) = Σ (devices replaced per year × typical device weight). These are general average weights; actual device weight varies by model and manufacturer.
This is a general educational estimate meant to highlight the cumulative impact of device turnover, not an exact measurement of your household waste. Extending a device’s usable life through repair, or recycling it through a certified e-waste program instead of the regular trash, are two of the most effective ways to reduce this footprint.
