Why Thrust-to-Weight Ratio Matters
A drone’s thrust-to-weight ratio (TWR) tells you how much spare power its motors have beyond what’s needed just to hover. A TWR of 1:1 can barely lift off; most flyable multirotors target at least 2:1, and agile freestyle or racing builds often aim for 4:1 or higher.
The Formulas
Total Thrust = Number of Motors × Max Thrust per Motor, and Thrust-to-Weight Ratio = Total Thrust ÷ Total Weight. Estimated hover throttle is roughly (Weight ÷ Total Thrust) × 100% — the lower this percentage, the more headroom you have for maneuvers.
Real hover throttle also depends on propeller efficiency, battery sag, and air density, so treat this as a build-planning estimate rather than an exact flight figure.
