What is a stock split?

A stock split increases (or, in a reverse split, decreases) the number of shares outstanding by a set ratio, while proportionally adjusting the price per share so the total value of a holding stays the same.

The formulas

New Shares = Original Shares × (Split To / Split From)
New Price per Share = Original Price / (Split To / Split From)

For example, in a 4-for-1 split, a shareholder with 100 shares at $300 would end up with 400 shares at $75 — the same total value, just divided differently.
