What is average speed?
Average speed tells you how fast something traveled overall, without regard to whether it sped up or slowed down along the way. It’s calculated from the total distance covered and the total time it took.
How this calculator works
This calculator uses the fundamental formula: Speed = Distance ÷ Time. Enter your distance in miles and your time split into hours and minutes, and it converts your time into decimal hours, divides it into the distance, then converts the result into miles per hour, kilometers per hour, and meters per second for convenience.
This gives an average speed over the whole distance and time — it does not reflect instantaneous speed at any single moment, which can be higher or lower during the trip.
