The Rabbit Cage Size Calculator estimates the minimum floor space a pet rabbit (or group of rabbits) needs, scaled to the rabbit’s adult body weight.
How the recommendation works
Larger rabbit breeds need proportionally more room to hop, stretch out fully, and stand up on their hind legs without touching the top of the enclosure. This calculator uses common house-rabbit welfare guidance: roughly 8 square feet of floor space for small rabbits under 6 lb, 10 square feet for medium rabbits up to 10 lb, and 12 square feet for larger breeds, multiplied by the number of rabbits housed together.
- Cage height should allow the rabbit to sit up fully on its hind legs, generally at least 18 inches
- These are minimums — most welfare organizations recommend the cage be paired with daily supervised exercise time outside it
