What This Calculator Does

This tool estimates how much packaging waste (by weight) a household generates in a year based on how many packaged items are used per week, the typical packaging weight, and the main material involved. It also shows how much of that waste could be diverted from landfill through recycling.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator multiplies your weekly item count by average packaging weight to get a weekly mass, then scales to a full year. It applies typical production-related carbon emission factors per kilogram for common packaging materials (plastic, cardboard, glass, and metal), based on general lifecycle-assessment ranges reported by waste and materials research bodies such as the EPA’s WARM model and EU packaging waste studies. The ‘CO2e saved by recycling’ figure applies a rough credit reflecting the emissions avoided when a material is recycled instead of landfilled or incinerated.

Why It Matters

Packaging is one of the most visible and frequent waste streams in daily life. Understanding both the volume and the emissions tied to it can help identify where switching to bulk buying, reusable containers, or better recycling habits would have the biggest effect.
