What this calculator does
The Livestock Fence Cost Calculator estimates the total material cost of fencing a pasture perimeter, combining the number of posts needed with the cost of wire, mesh, or rail material.
How the formula works
The number of posts is calculated by dividing the total perimeter by the chosen post spacing and rounding up, then adding one extra post to close the loop (posts = ceil(perimeter รท spacing) + 1). Post cost and material cost (wire or rail priced per linear foot) are calculated separately and added together for the total estimated material cost.
- Closer post spacing increases post count and cost but adds fence rigidity
- This estimate covers materials only, not labor, gates, corner bracing, or equipment rental
A note on accuracy
Real project costs vary by region, terrain, fence type (woven wire, barbed wire, high-tensile, electric, or rail), and supplier pricing, so treat this as a general planning estimate and get local quotes before budgeting a project.
