What this calculator does

The limestone calculator estimates how many tons of crushed limestone you need to cover an area, such as a driveway base or walking path, at a chosen depth.

The formula

Volume in cubic feet is length times width times depth (converted to feet), divided by 27 to get cubic yards. Crushed limestone typically weighs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, so multiplying cubic yards by that factor gives the estimated tonnage to order — limestone is almost always sold and delivered by the ton.

This is a general estimate for planning purposes. Compaction and the specific gradation of limestone (such as 3/4-inch minus versus screenings) can shift actual density slightly, so check with your supplier for their exact conversion.
