What This Calculator Does
The insulation calculator estimates how many bags, batts, or rolls of insulation you need to cover a given wall, floor, ceiling, or attic area, based on the coverage rating printed on the product packaging.
How the Calculation Works
The area to be insulated is found by multiplying its length by its width. A waste allowance is added to account for cutting around framing, wiring, plumbing, and other obstructions. The adjusted area is then divided by the coverage-per-package figure (found on the product label, since this varies by insulation type, thickness, and R-value) and rounded up to a whole number of packages.
Tips for Insulation Projects
- Coverage per package varies significantly between batt insulation, blown-in loose fill, and rigid foam board — always use the number printed on your specific product’s packaging for the most accurate estimate.
- Check your region’s recommended R-value for attics, walls, and floors, since required insulation levels vary by climate zone.
- Leave a small gap around recessed lighting and other heat-producing fixtures unless the insulation is rated as contact-safe.
