How This GPA Calculator Works

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by converting each letter grade into a numeric grade point on the standard 4.0 scale, multiplying it by that course’s credit hours to get quality points, then dividing the total quality points by the total credit hours attempted.

The Formula

GPA = (sum of grade points x credit hours) / total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 quality points. Add up all quality points and divide by total credits to get your overall GPA.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Some schools use slightly different scales or weight honors/AP classes differently — check with your registrar for your institution’s exact policy.
  • Leave a course slot on ‘Not used’ if you have fewer than five courses to include.
  • This tool is for general educational planning purposes and does not replace an official transcript calculation.
