What is Free Float?
Free float refers to the number of a company’s shares that are actually available for public trading, excluding shares held by insiders, founders, governments, or other parties unlikely to sell in the open market.
The Formula
Free Float = Total Shares Outstanding – Locked-In Shares. Free Float Percentage = (Free Float ÷ Total Shares Outstanding) × 100. Many stock indexes weight companies using free float rather than total shares outstanding.
