What Faraday’s Law describes
Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction states that a changing magnetic flux through a coil induces an electromotive force (EMF, essentially a voltage) in that coil: EMF = -N × (ΔΦ / Δt), where N is the number of turns in the coil, ΔΦ is the change in magnetic flux through one turn, and Δt is the time over which that change happens. The minus sign (Lenz’s Law) indicates the induced EMF opposes the change that caused it.
How this calculator works
Enter the number of turns in the coil, the change in magnetic flux through it, and the time interval over which the flux changed. The calculator divides the flux change by the time interval, multiplies by the number of turns, and flips the sign to give the induced EMF in volts.
Faraday’s Law is the basic principle behind generators, transformers, and induction charging — faster flux changes or more coil turns both produce a larger induced voltage. This calculator is for general physics education purposes.
