What this calculator does
The Fabric Calculator estimates how many yards of fabric to buy for a sewing project, whether that’s curtains, cushion covers, garments, or quilt panels.
How it works
Enter the finished length and width of one piece, how many pieces you need, the width of the fabric bolt you plan to buy, and your seam allowance. The calculator adds seam allowance to each piece, works out how many pieces fit across the fabric width, and figures out how many rows of pieces you’ll need to cut. It then adds a 10% buffer to the base yardage to allow for pattern matching, shrinkage, and cutting mistakes.
Actual fabric needs can vary with directional prints, pattern repeats, and napped fabrics like velvet, so round up and check with your pattern instructions for specialty projects.
