How this calculator works

This tool estimates how long a journey to a distant exoplanet would take, as observed from Earth, given the distance in light-years and the spacecraft’s speed as a fraction of the speed of light (c).

The formula

Travel time (in the Earth reference frame) equals distance divided by speed: t = d / (f×c), where d is distance in light-years and f is speed as a fraction of c. This gives the time in years directly since one light-year is the distance light travels in one year. Note this does not account for relativistic time dilation experienced by travelers on board — their own clocks would tick slower at high speeds.
