What This Calculator Does
A dot plot displays each data value as a dot placed above its position on a number line, stacking dots when a value repeats. This calculator does the counting for you so you know exactly how to draw the plot by hand or check one you’ve already drawn.
How It Works
The calculator sorts your values, groups identical values together, and counts how many times each one appears. It then reports:
- The range (minimum to maximum), which sets the width of your number line
- Each value’s frequency, which is how many dots stack above that point
- The most frequent value (the mode), which will have the tallest stack of dots
Dot plots are especially useful for small data sets because every individual value stays visible, unlike a histogram which groups values into bins. This tool is for general educational and classroom use.
