What is disposable income?
Disposable income is the amount of money you have left after paying all mandatory taxes. It’s the base figure economists and personal finance planners use before then subtracting essential expenses to get discretionary income.
The formula
Disposable Income = Gross Income − Total Taxes (income tax plus payroll taxes such as Social Security and Medicare). This is different from discretionary income, which further subtracts essential living costs.
This calculator is for general personal finance education and planning purposes. Actual tax withholding depends on your specific tax bracket, filing status, deductions, and jurisdiction.
