What is Direct Material Price Variance?

Direct Material Price Variance (DMPV) is a standard costing metric used in managerial accounting. It measures the difference between what a company expected to pay for raw materials and what it actually paid, for the quantity actually purchased.

The formula

DMPV = (Standard Price − Actual Price) × Actual Quantity Purchased. A positive result is a favorable variance (materials cost less than expected); a negative result is unfavorable (materials cost more than expected).
