What is the Curie constant?

The Curie constant appears in Curie’s law, which describes how the magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnetic material varies with temperature: χ = C ÷ T. It captures how strongly a material’s atomic magnetic moments respond to a field once thermal agitation is accounted for.

The formula

In SI units, the Curie constant is C = (μ0 × N × peff2 × μB2) ÷ (3kB), where N is the number density of magnetic ions, peff is the effective magnetic moment in Bohr magnetons, μB is the Bohr magneton, and kB is Boltzmann’s constant.

Curie’s law applies to non-interacting magnetic moments at temperatures well above any magnetic ordering transition; materials that order magnetically (ferromagnets, antiferromagnets) instead follow the Curie-Weiss law near their transition temperature.
