What this calculates

A bullet’s kinetic energy at the muzzle (or at any point along its flight) is a common way to compare the power of different cartridges, based on its mass and velocity.

The formula

Kinetic energy is KE = ½mv². In the common imperial ammunition convention, energy in foot-pounds is calculated as KE(ft-lb) = (weight in grains × velocity in fps²) / 450,240, which already accounts for converting grains to slugs and unit conversions. This calculator also reports the equivalent value in joules.
