The Boy or Girl Paradox is a classic probability puzzle showing that the exact phrasing of a clue about a two-child family changes the probability that both children are boys, even though intuition says it shouldn’t.
How the Math Works
Assuming each child is independently equally likely to be a boy or girl, a two-child family has four equally likely combinations: BB, BG, GB, GG.
- “At least one is a boy” rules out GG, leaving BB, BG, GB — so P(both boys) = 1/3.
- “The older (or a specifically identified) child is a boy” pins down one child directly, leaving only BB and BG for that slot — so P(both boys) = 1/2.
- “At least one is a boy born on a Tuesday” adds a rare identifying detail that breaks more of the symmetry between the two children, pushing the answer to 13/27 ≈ 48.1% — closer to 1/2 than the plain “at least one boy” case.
