How a boost converter works
A boost (step-up) converter uses a switching inductor to produce an output voltage higher than its input, storing energy in the inductor while a switch is on and releasing it to the output when the switch is off.
The formula
For an ideal boost converter operating in continuous conduction mode, output voltage is Vout = Vin ÷ (1 − D), where D is the duty cycle (fraction of each switching period the switch is on). Assuming lossless conversion, input current is found from power balance: Iin = (Vout × Iout) ÷ Vin.
Real converters have switching, conduction, and inductor losses that reduce efficiency below 100%, so actual input current and power draw will be somewhat higher than this ideal estimate. This calculator is for general electronics education and design planning.
