What is BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that relates a person’s weight to their height. It is widely used by health organizations as a quick way to categorize weight status across large populations.

How it’s calculated

BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). The result is compared against standard World Health Organization ranges: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

BMI does not directly measure body fat and does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition, so it should be treated as a general screening tool rather than a precise diagnosis. This calculator is for general educational purposes only.
