š Attenuation Calculator
Estimate how much a signal, beam, or wave weakens as it passes through a material, based on the standard exponential attenuation law used in physics and engineering.
What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates how much a beam, signal, or wave of energy weakens (attenuates) as it travels through a thickness of material. It applies to a wide range of physics contexts, including light through a medium, radiation through shielding, and signal loss through a physical barrier.
The Formula
The calculation uses the standard exponential attenuation law: I = Iā Ć e^(āμx), where Iā is the initial intensity, μ is the material’s linear attenuation coefficient (per unit length), and x is the thickness the wave travels through. As thickness or the attenuation coefficient increases, transmitted intensity drops exponentially rather than linearly.
Reading the Results
Alongside the transmitted intensity, the calculator reports the attenuation in decibels (dB), the percentage of the original intensity that gets through, and the half-value layer ā the thickness of this exact material needed to cut intensity exactly in half. These extra figures make it easier to compare different materials or thicknesses at a glance.
A Practical Note
Real-world attenuation coefficients depend on the specific material, its density, and the frequency or energy of the wave involved. This calculator is meant for general educational and planning purposes; for engineering, safety, or shielding design work, always use verified coefficient values from an appropriate reference source or standard.
