What counts as added sugar?

Added sugar is any sugar or syrup added to food or drinks during processing or preparation, separate from sugars that occur naturally in foods like fruit or milk. High added sugar intake is commonly linked with excess calorie intake and various long-term health concerns.

How this calculator works

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a daily added sugar limit of about 36 grams (9 teaspoons) for men and 25 grams (6 teaspoons) for women. The World Health Organization (WHO) separately recommends keeping added sugar under 10% of total daily calories, with an ideal target under 5%, based on 4 calories per gram of sugar. Enter your sex, approximate daily calorie intake, and today’s added sugar to see how you compare against both guidelines.
